Esther: passionate food technologist

Esther is a food technologist, has worked in the food industry and, through various wanderings, ended up with her passion: making cheese and teaching others the art of cheese making.

As a farmer’s daughter, she talks passionately about the process of cheese making and enjoys doing this during the lessons she gives. Because of Esther’s experience with young people and young adults as a youth worker, she easily responds to the atmosphere in the group and involves all students in the technological process.

Way of working

Esther is coming to your school

Esther comes to your school and provides the entire lesson, both the theoretical and practical part. The lesson requires a practically furnished room with handwashing facilities, power supplies for the (small) boilers and a work surface. Consider a practical room with kitchen and/or food production facilities.

She takes all materials such as the (small) cheese tub, cheese press and other cheese materials and ingredients to the location. The only condition is that there is electricity, hot water and a (small) work surface.

The lesson lasts 4 to 5 hours

The lesson lasts about 4-5 hours, depending on wishes. In consultation, it is possible to shorten the lesson slightly, if this fits better within the lesson program. With a standard lesson duration, two groups can take the lesson in one day if desired.

Any desired level is possible

The lessons can be tailored to any level and are therefore suitable for primary education, secondary education, MBO and HBO.

It is possible to adapt the lesson to your wishes

If you have additional wishes, please contact Esther. Esther is flexible, and a lot is possible!

Consider, for example, giving the theory lessons yourself. Esther combines theory and practice during the lessons, but it is also possible that the school itself gives the theory lessons, for example a module in production development, dairy, or cheese.

It is possible to combine the cheese lesson with a butter lesson. Contact Esther about the possibilities.

What does a cheese lesson look like?

The cheese lesson starts with the milk. The students fill their own cheese tub themselves. As a result, they see the milk change into cheese from the start during the lesson while they keep their noses in the loop. The students are taken step by step through the cheese process from the milk to the end product, the cheese. There is plenty of room for questions in between.

At the end of the lesson, students take home their own cheese, including an accompanying cheese box to properly care for and mature the cheese. The cheese box contains all the materials needed to further treat the cheese, such as salt for the brine, coating, coating sponge, cheese paper and a cheese board to ripen the cheese. The box also contains clear instructions on how to further treat the cheese at home.

Of course, after the cheese lesson day, it is possible to continue to ask Esther questions about the process and cheese free of charge.
